Presentation Description

Institution: International Medical Robotics Academy - VIC, Australia

Purpose There is a requirement for high quality robotic simulation training. This is driven by the current need to improve exposure to robotic surgery to meet that the proposed future demand for highly skilled robotic surgeons as robotic technology penetrates practice in Australia and New Zealand. The roboSET basic robotic skills training course is a RACS accredited online + two- day face to face training course offering introductory multiplatform bedside and console training. The focus of this programmatic evaluation is to present our experience with basic skills training across multiple robotic surgical platforms – using a combination of virtual reality, hydrogel model- based and human factors simulation training. Methodology Demographic, pre- and post- course data was collected from consenting participants. This evaluation focussed on learner reactions based on Kirkpatrick’s model of evaluation. Data was collated for summary statistics. Results 43 participants completed the course between February 2022 and December 2023. These candidates represented 3 specialities (general n=26 gynaecology n=7 urology n=9 undecided n=1) and all levels of training (resident n=1 registrar n=9, fellow n=12, consultant n=21). Previous robotic exposure was limited in the cohort. All candidates completed the course and felt that the course met their learning objectives. Conclusions Robotic surgical training across multiple platforms is deliverable in an Australian context. The training is highly rated by participants and shows evidence of post- course improvement in robotic knowledge and technical skills. This data will be used to inform ongoing curriculum development to meet the needs of mutli-level learners in the multiplatform robotic surgical context.
