Presentation Description

Institution: University of Auckland - Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand

Purpose The RACS surgical training program is designed to teach skills that enable the trainees to have a career while maintaining a positive working environment. Trainee wellbeing plays a pivotal role in striving for excellence. This is a national survey of the level of training engagement and flourishing in Surgical Education and Training (SET) trainees in NZ. Method An online survey in “Qualtrics” platform was sent to all SET trainees of NZ addressing general demography and the engagement and flourishing during training by two validated scales: Utrecht Work Engagement Scale-9 (UWES-9) and Flourishing Scale (FS) with a maximum score of 7 for each item. The data analysis was carried out on the same platform. The university ethics approval number is UAHPEC24933. Results Fifty-one out of 220 SET trainees responded (23.2%) with male to female ratio of 1.8:1. The ethnic distribution was 68.6% European, 11.7% Maori and Pacific Peoples, and 21.5% Asian. SET 1 to SET 5 trainees responded mostly. The mean UWES-9 scale for each item varied from 4.22 to 5.76, and the mean FS from 5.2 to 5.82. The trainees engaged in all disciplines of surgery responded. Conclusion Females responded to the survey more than males. Senior SET levels had poor response rates. Both UWES-9 and FS indicate that the trainees are at a high level of training engagement and flourishing. These encouraging results call for further study on the enabling factors for engagement and flouring in surgical training.
