Spleen is a fundamental organ that plays a role in maintaining immunity in individuals. The spleen is the most common organ that is at high risk of injury following blunt or penetrating abdominal trauma. Every 4 out of 10 trauma individuals that develop a splenic injury, result in splenectomy. Following a splenectomy there is an increased risk of developing serious infections that can result in a 2% mortality rate. To prevent the development of such infections and ensure a reasonable immune response, a partial splenectomy maybe considered. Spleen preserving surgery is usually constricted to young children that have splenic masses, splenic cysts or benign masses. The outcome of spleen preserving surgery in young trauma individuals is currently unknown with limited studies following the outcomes of spleen preserving injury in young trauma individuals. This poster demonstrates the case of a 20-year-old male who sustained a spleen injury following a motor vehicle accident resulting in a partial splenectomy to preserve immunological status. The technique and outcome of this case are reviewed to establish the importance of consideration of spleen preserving surgery in young trauma individuals to reduce the risk of developing life-threatening infections and maintaining immunity. Spleen preserving surgery has been shown to reduce post operative complications in younger children but there have not been cases of spleen preserving surgery among young trauma individuals. This case reports aims to highlight then spleen persevering surgery can be undertaken in young trauma individual to maintain immunological status.
