Institution: Austin Hospital - Victoria, Australia
Dr Asiri Arachchi, a CSSANZ colorectal fellow at Austin Hospital Australia, led a volunteer visiting team to Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital in Suva Fiji in 2023. The team included Dr Andrew Bui, a Colorectal Surgeon at Austin Hospital and Dr Binura Lekamalage, a Surgical Registrar at Tauranga Hospital New Zealand. The aim was to promote colorectal surgery in Fiji, with an emphasis on teaching local surgical registrars, surgeons and nurses as well as assisting the local surgeons, Dr Illiatu Delasau and Dr Tim Qereqeretabua, with complex colorectal cases.
CWM hospital is the largest of two public hospitals on the main island of Fiji that serve a country of almost one million people. Although the hospital serves such a high needs population, the resources at the CWM hospital are extremely scarce including a lack of simple wound dressings, stoma bags, sterile gowns, gastrointestinal staplers and vascular grafts. The hospital rely heavily on equipment that is donated by overseas visiting teams.
With the help of Austin Hospital and Monash Hospital, the team were able to donate valuable surgical equipment to the team at CWM including surgical staplers, vascular grafts, rigid sigmoidoscopes, stoma bags and LigaSure devices. The team held several teaching sessions including education about colorectal cancer, marking of stoma bags for nurses, bedside teaching and final exam preparation. The team assisted in several complex colorectal surgical cases which proved more challenging without the abundance of equipment that is available back in Australasia. The team were successful in their aim to promote colorectal surgery at CWM hospital and to strengthen the connection with our Pacific nations.
