Despite being ubiquitous in daily life, mobile phones are often overlooked in a sterile environments, such as the operating rooms. Many studies have demonstrated a high frequency of bacterial contamination on healthcare workers personal mobile devices. These have included both common skin flora and more concerning resistant pathogenic strains.
Such findings are paramount to understanding the risks of mobile phones in contributing and propagating nosocomial infections. Practices and guidelines for using and sanitising phones in the operating theatre should be implemented as standard practice.
