Purpose
TikTok has taken the world by storm; it is one of the fastest growing social media platforms. While known for entertainment, it can be a powerful health promotion and educational tool. A popular "TikTok trend" is the rise of skin care and those leading the movement the “skinfluencers” (skin care influencer). These "skinfluencers" promote sun safe behaviours and educate on warning signs of sun damage. Melanoma is the primary cancer affecting Australians between 15-29. The aim is to investigate whether TikTok could be a useful tool in increasing sun safety and skin cancer awareness, ultimately contributing to the prevention of skin cancers.
Method
A review of content surrounding health promotion of skin care, sun protection, and sun damage awareness on TikTok was performed.
Results
The top ten “skinfluencers” based on followers were identified, 70% were medical professionals (plastic surgeons or dermatologists). In a qualitative analysis of video content, medical professional’s messages were skewed towards skin cancer prevention, non-medical videos focused on prevention of signs of ageing. Key messages included wearing SPF and protective clothing, skin checks, and early signs of sun damage.
Conclusion
TikTok has emerged as a catalyst for a new generation of sun safe and skin health educated patients. The app can be utilised as a powerful tool for health promotion and primary prevention of skin cancer by raising awareness of sun protection and skin surveillance. This popular free platform can be harnessed for health promotion in the aim of primary prevention of skin cancer and could be extended to other areas of health.
