Poster

Presentation Description

Institution: Christchurch Hospital - Canterbury, Aotearoa New Zealand

Changes in Invasive Group A Streptococcal (iGAS) incidence has been widely documented in the post pandemic literature, including the UK, Europe, USA and Australia. The Public Health Communication Centre Aotearoa has recently voiced their concern over the lack of notifiability of iGAS, in contrast to other high income countries, due to this emerging threat. We present two local cases of paediatric invasive streptococcal infection managed by Otorhinolaryngology and Paediatrics in Christchurch in early 2024. Case one is a 4 month old female who was treated for otitis media who developed mastoiditis with facial cellulitis. The second is a 13 year old male with temporal myositis, sinusitis and right frontal bone intraosseous abscess. Recent worldwide epidemiology, typical presentations of iGAS, and the role of potential Streptococcal vaccination are also reviewed.
