Poster

Presentation Description

Institution: Westmead Hospital - NSW, Australia

The integration of mindfulness into surgery via various strategies; Breathing techniques Preoperative rituals Mindful observation Body scan meditation Mindful communication Postoperative debriefing Mindfulness training programs Integrating into culture and CME Mindful breathing techniques, intentional and slow inhalation and exhalation, incorporated before surgeries or during breaks. Establishing preoperative rituals, such as brief moments of silence or mindful walks, aids in transitioning surgeons into a state of presence and concentration. Encouraging surgeons to engage in mindful observation of their surroundings and sensations before procedures helps ground them in the present moment. Brief body scan meditations, where attention is systematically directed to different parts of the body, can be introduced as part of the surgical routine to release tension and improve awareness. Mindful communication within the surgical team fosters active listening and clear communication, enhancing teamwork. The incorporation of pauses during surgery for reflection allows surgeons to check in with their mental and emotional states, promoting conscious decision-making. Mindful debriefing sessions after surgeries encourage surgeons to share experiences and feelings in a supportive environment. Mindfulness training programs and integration into continuing medical education provide surgeons with tools to manage stress and improve overall well-being. Fostering a supportive culture that values mental health of surgical professionals. Recognizing benefits of mindfulness in reducing burnout and promoting work-life balance contributes to a centered and resilient surgical practice. Ultimately, mindfulness in surgery aims to enhance overall experience for both surgeons and patients.
