Sir Benjamin Keith Rank was born and raised in Melbourne. After obtaining his Master of Surgery at the University of Melbourne in 1937, Sir Rank developed immense interest in Plastic Surgery, and furthered his postgraduate training in England under the guidance of Sir Harold Gillies, known as the father of plastic surgery in England.
Sir Rank joined the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps in 1940 and commanded the plastic surgery unit in Egypt. After returning from his mission in 1942, Sir Rank established a team for the development of plastic surgery unit in Australia. Despite facing doubts and distrusts, Sir Rank set up the first formal plastic surgery training unit in Royal Melbourne Hospital in 1946 and the Victorian Plastic Surgery Unit in 1965, where trainings were provided to plastic trainees and nurses till date.
Sir Rank served in a myriad of roles including being an author, professor, lecturer, pioneer of plastic surgery in Victoria, and held leadership roles in multiple surgical colleges. His love for the specialty have made him a world-renowned plastic surgeon and trainees across the world travelled to Australia to learn from him.
Sir Rank retired in 1983 but continued his legacy as the President of Interplast Australia, a programme that enabled plastic surgeons to perform surgical correctional procedures in the less fortunate neighbouring countries.
The Foundation’s BK Rank Travelling Fellowship Fund was established in 2011 in honour of him, and had been funding plastic surgery research for better patient outcomes.
