Abstract: This prospective study, endeavors to unravel correlations between age, gender, sex, and BMI in patients grappling with biliary pathology across two prominent hospitals in the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network. Methods: Over a 14-week period, data from 182 patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy were meticulously collected and subjected to thorough analysis. The study, conducted in a blinded fashion, diligently recorded demographic details, including age, gender, and BMI, in a comprehensive spreadsheet. Results: Age Distribution: The age distribution among patients revealed a noteworthy pattern, majority falling within the 30-60 age range. Specifically, the breakdown is as follows: Below 20 years (0.55%), 20-30 years (8.24%), 30-40 years (17.58%), 40-50 years (17.03%), 50-60 years (16.48%), 60-70 years (15.93%), 70-80 years (12.64%), 80-90 years (7.14%), and 90-100 years (1.10%). Gender Distribution: Gender distribution displayed a noticeable skew, with 65.38% of patients being female, and the remaining 34.62% male. BMI Distribution: The study employed the established BMI scale, revealing the following breakdown: Normal weight (13.19%), Overweight (16.48%), Obese (36.26%), and BMI data not recorded (34.07%). Hospital Stay: Regarding hospital stay, durations varied from 0 to 31 days, with the majority experiencing stays of 0-2 days. Conclusion: This research provides valuable insights into the demographic dynamics of patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy.Biliary pathology requiring surgical intervention is more prevalent in the middle-aged to older population, with a noteworthy gender disparity favoring females.A substantial association between higher BMI and the need for surgery is apparent.
