Poster

Presentation Description

Institution: Westmead Hospital - NSW, Australia

Cosmetic Surgery training has become a focus of debate in recent times since the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) announced its new cosmetic reforms to improve patient outcomes following cosmetic surgery. Under the previous regulations, medical graduates are free to perform cosmetic surgery without the need for formal surgical training or a fellowship awarded by a surgical governmental body such as the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. As such, many patients have suffered under the hands of untrained professionals in Cosmetic surgery. AHPRA has since established cosmetic reform guidelines to help provide a standardised training regulations for Plastic Surgeons to practice Cosmetic Surgery. Cosmetic Surgery and Reconstructive Surgery are essentially two sides of the same coin and share similar fundamental principles in their approaches. This study aims to review and provide a clearer understanding of the similarities between the two and the inherent cosmetic training principles in reconstructive surgery from a Plastic Reconstructive Surgery trainee perspective as well as to give a snapshot of the current state of formal Cosmetic training in Australia.
