Presentation Description
Institution: Alfred Health - Melbourne, Australia
Background:
Bronchogenic cysts are uncommon congenital malformations of the tracheobronchial tree, and are very infrequently found in the neck. Diagnosis is often difficult to make on clinical and pre-operative imaging alone due to the broad range of differentials for a neck mass.
Methods:
We present a series of 3 case reports in which patients present with cystic lesions in the neck, all of which had been diagnosed pre-operatively as different pathology.
Results:
We highlight the indeterminate diagnosis of bronchogenic cysts from pre-operative imaging alone, and also suggest that non-operative management is likely to be unsuccessful, particularly once they become symptomatic.
Conclusion:
We reinforce that surgical excision should be the definitive treatment, and subsequent histopathology is the only method of definitive diagnosis.
