Institution: Macquarie University Hospital - NSW, Australia
Background:
The 19th century in Europe marked a notable upsurge in reconstructive literature, influenced by procedures originating from India and Italy. Despite England's successful introduction of a forehead flap in 1816, dedicated Plastic Surgery texts were scarce in the English-speaking world. This study aimed to identify the inaugural English textbook exclusively dedicated to Plastic Surgery.
Methods:
A comprehensive examination was conducted across diverse databases (PubMed, MEDLINE, Web of Knowledge, Anthropology, JSTOR, Encyclopedia of ancient history). Extensive exploration of materials at the State Library of Victoria, the University of Melbourne, and HathiTrust was undertaken. The search focused on publications predating Harold Gillies' influential 1920 textbook.
Results:
Within this expansive literary landscape, Australian surgeon William Moore emerged as a significant figure, authoring the first English Plastic Surgery textbook in 1899. Despite Moore's undeniable pioneering legacy, various factors have obscured his rightful place in surgical history, hindering full recognition.
Conclusions:
This study identifies William Moore as a notable figure in the history of Plastic Surgery, unveiling his role as the author of the inaugural English textbook in 1899. The findings underscore the need for a reevaluation of Moore's contributions to ensure his rightful recognition in the annals of surgical history. The study emphasizes the importance of acknowledging pioneers like Moore, whose work has significantly shaped the trajectory of Plastic Surgery.
