Presentation Description

PURPOSE Delays in breast cancer care are known to contribute to adverse outcomes. This audit assessed access to same-day breast imaging at a tertiary breast centre in Western Australia, with particular focus on delay to definitive diagnosis of breast cancer and definitive treatment. METHODOLOGY Data on access to same day Radiology was prospectively collected at a tertiary breast surgery unit between June and November 2023. The data included both in/outpatients who required imaging following a consultation with a Breast Surgeon or Physician. Patients in whom imaging was deemed necessary were appointed under one of the following scheduling conditions: new slot created, rescheduled, or outsourced. If rescheduled, the length of delay was noted, and new diagnoses of cancer were also noted. RESULTS In total, 50 records were collected, which comprised of 49 outpatients and 1 inpatient. New Radiology slots were created for 12 patients, 2 cases were outsourced to an external radiology service, and 36 patients had their Radiology appointments rescheduled. Of the patients who had Radiology appointments rescheduled, 9 were subsequently diagnosed with cancer. Those diagnosed with cancer had a mean delay to diagnosis of 10.3 days, and a mean interval between initial surgical consultation and surgery or start of treatment of 40.25 days. CONCLUSION Access to same-day breast imaging has become increasingly limited at this tertiary breast centre, which results in some patients experiencing delays in receiving a definitive diagnosis of breast cancer. New resource allocation is being implemented following this audit to improve access to same day imaging in this hospital.
