Presentation Description
Institution: Department of Traumatology, John Hunter Hospital and University of Newcastle - NSW, Australia
Purpose:
To evaluate a recently established 24/7 trauma surgical specialist admitting service’s activity and outcomes as a potential benchmark for comparison and service development in ANZ.
Methods:
A 12-month review ending on 23/08/2024 of the John Hunter adult trauma service (7 specialist trauma surgeons, ANZAST fellowship, dedicated junior medical staff, 7-day case management). Data collection included: trauma resuscitation/admission/operating activity, descriptors of patient population, outcomes.
Results:
During the 12-month period the Trauma Surgery Service supervised 1250 trauma activations and 1676 trauma admissions. 71% were male, 93% suffered blunt mechanism. Median age was 43yrs, median LOS 3 days, 14% required ICU. Mortality was 2.3%, 80% were discharged to home. 506 patients were defined as major trauma with median LOS of 8 days and 6.1% mortality.
Conclusions:
This contemporary description of a 24/7 trauma surgical admitting service with excellent outcomes could inform future workload adjusted planning for trauma surgical services in ANZ and provide a measurable benchmark for comparison.
